NEW BREMEN — A New Bremen man died as a result of a camper fire along Southland Road Sunday morning.

The St. Marys Township Fire Department received a phone call at 1:12 a.m. Sunday reporting a fire in a camper with people inside it. When crews arrived on the scene a short time after the call, they found the camper, in a remote, wooded area off Southland Road, near County Road 66A, engulfed in flames.

“One of the occupants made it outside,” St. Marys Township Fire Chief Chad Hicks told The Evening Leader. “We extinguished the fire and called the Auglaize County Sheriff’s Office and state fire marshal’s office to investigate.”

The victim was Ben Homan, 19, of New Bremen. Hicks said the initial cause has been labeled undetermined but the fire marshal’s report is not finalized at this time. Hicks said foul play is not expected in the incident.

Auglaize County Sheriff Al Solomon said preliminary reports indicate there was a gathering of five people at the location and Homan was sleeping in the camper at the time of the fire. Crews remained on the scene until approximately 6:30 a.m. Sunday.

Deputies, detectives, the St. Marys Township Fire Department, state fire marshal’s office and the Auglaize County Coroner’s Office are assisting in the investigation. The New Bremen Police Department also assisted at the scene.

The investigation continues into the incident.
