New Bremen State Bound

The New Bremen volleyball team will try to win the school's first state championship this week.

With other Midwest Athletic Conference teams vying for state titles year after year and after falling to defending champion Jackson Center last year, it is now the Cardinals’ chance at winning a state title after defeating Fort Loramie, 19-25, 25-20, 25-13, 25-17 in Saturday’s Division IV regional championship.

The Cardinals (26-1) will play Buckeye Central (26-1) from the Elida Region in a state semifinal at 4 p.m. on Thursday at Wright State University’s Nutter Center.

New Bremen High School has never won a state team championship. This year's team has a shot at one.

“When I took the job two years ago, it was something I was not planning,” Cardinals coach Diana Kramer said. “But this is where my family is and I told the girls without looking them in the eye that , ‘we are going to state, and it is going to be soon.’

“They have put in hours and hours of hard work and sweat and the fact that they were able to accomplish that is absolutely remarkable.”

“These girls deserve it. They come in every day and work hard,” the Cardinals' Paige Jones said. “The confidence level that they have has increased dramatically this season. Last year, they were nervous to swing hard because they didn’t want to make a mistake and now they are not afraid to do that.”

In Division III, Versailles and Coldwater advanced to state from the Midwest Athletic Conference.
