BASEBALL
DIVISION IV AT MARIA STEIN
MARION LOCAL 9, NEW KNOXVILLE 6

MARIA STEIN — After a wild first couple innings that saw the two teams combine to score 10 runs, Marion Local settled in and won a sectional-opening game over conference foe New Knoxville 9-6 on Tuesday night.

The Flyers advance to play at Minster on Thursday at 5 p.m. in a sectional final game. The two teams played in the regular season back on April 24, with Minster scoring six straight runs in the late innings to pick up a 7-1 win.

Marion Local scored five runs in the bottom of the first as Jonathan Schmitz walked with the bases loaded, Adam Franck grounded out for an RBI and Brandon Fleck delivered a two-run double to make it 4-0. Ian Kramer’s flyout allowed Fleck to scamper home for the 5-0 lead.

New Knoxville didn’t roll over, however. The Rangers answered with four runs of their own in the next half inning. Coverty’s two-run single and a Marion Local error allowed all four runs to score after two men were out in the inning.

Marion Local made the lead two runs in the bottom of the second when Schmitz doubled to bring home Darrin Hays.

A Bryce Moeller RBI single in the third tacked on the seventh run, and an RBI double followed by a New Knoxville error allowed the Flyers to score two in the bottom of the sixth.

New Knoxville scored two in the seventh, but the Flyers closed things out for the tournament win.

Aaron Brunswick went the distance on the hill for Marion Local, allowing two earned runs and striking out five over seven innings.
