Minster, Fort Loramie ACME Open District Play Friday

Staff Writer

Just like the championship game, the Minster ACME baseball team began the Auglaize/Shelby Co. sectional in a bit of a hole after falling in the opener of the double-elimination tournament.

In both cases they dug their way out and emerged the winner.

Minster responded by winning back-to-back must-win games and then knocked off Fort Loramie with a big comeback in the title game to capture the sectional crown and advance to the district tournament in walk-off fashion.

Minster scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh inning for the dramatic 10-9 victory over rival Loramie on Saturday.

Kyle Reithman crossed the plate with the winning run after Eric Schmidt put the ball in play, leading to an error at third base. Minster tied the game with a furious rally started by Ethan Lehmkuhl’s lead-off walk. Adam Ketner then singled to left field to set the table. Dylan Sharp doubled to right field, scoring Lehmkuhl. When Reithman walked, it loaded the bases for Noah Enneking, who patiently drew an RBI walk. Another walk, this time by Logan Heitkamp, pushed across the tying run, setting up Schmidt’s game-winning contact.

Minster will open district play on Friday, July 13 against the second-seeded team to emerge from the Mercer County sectional at 8 p.m. Fort Loramie also advances as the runner-up by playing the top-seeded Mercer County team on Friday at 6 p.m.

The winner of both of Friday’s games then face off on Saturday, July 14 at 1 p.m. while the losing teams of both Friday games face off in an elimination game at approximately 3 p.m.
A 1 p.m. game on Sunday in another elimination game will be played, followed by Monday’s championship games. The first championship game will be played at 6 p.m. If the team from the loser’s bracket wins the game, another winner-takes-all district title game will be played following the first game. The winner advances to the state tournament in Defiance from July 21-23.
