Walkers, runners and dogs from around the area will be dashing down Fourth Street to support the mission of 1heart2souls on Sunday.

The Minster Mile, an event that raises money and awareness for the 1heart2souls group with a mission to support parents who have been given a poor prenatal prognosis, have suffered the loss of an infant, or have received the news their newborn has a disability, returns this weekend.

“With an increase in donations and offered prayers we were able to help more families this year,” said Mary Lou Slonkosky, an organizer and 1heart2souls team member. “We are only able to help those based upon the generosity of our community. Our goal is to always to move forward and we do so with faith in regards to fundraising.”

The event, which is a straight mile where runners can see the finish line from the starting line, will now finish in front of Centennial and Oktoberfest Parks. Adam “Bubs” Ranly will perform in the gazebo. Food, brats, hot dogs, slushies, popcorn and adult beverages will be available at the concession stands.

The Minster Mile includes a recreational wave (6:30 p.m., $15 entry feet), a men’s competitive wave (7 p.m., $15 entry fee), a women’s competitive wave (7:20 p.m., $15 entry fee), a dog mile (7:40 p.m., $15 entry fee) and a kids (10 and under) untimed quarter-mile dash (8 p.m., $5 entry fee, participants receive a ribbon). Minster Mile T-shirts will be sold separately for $10 adult, $7 youth. Door prizes and awards will be given out following the quarter mile dash.

Last year Fort Loramie standout runner Joe Ballas won the men’s event with a 4:24.8 time - less than two seconds better than brother Tom Ballas, who finished in 4:27.6. Molly Kearns won the women’s race with a 5:44.7 time. Minster grad and record-setting Wright State pole vaulter Maria Heckman finished second with a 6:01.1 time.

Slonkosky said the event has received tremendous support from area businesses. Minster Dental is the platinum sponsor of the event. MSC (Marketing Strategy Coaches) is the gold sponsor. Forever Fit, Baumer Construction and True Value are silver sponsors. Ernst Sports, Garmann/Miller Architects and Engineers, the Knights of Columbus, BT Photography and the Minster Journeyman’s Club are bronze sponsors. Franklin House Media, the Minster Service Club, Wagner’s IGA, Marathon Gas Station (South), the Dannon Company, Falcon Financial, Bernhold Insurance, Minster Bank, JTDM, Sara Paper, Bud’s Pizza and Redskin Express also helped the effort for this year’s Minster Mile.

“They make it possible for us to continue our mission,” Slonkosky said.
