Week 3 MAC Football: Flyers, Cavs Showdown HIghlights League Opening Week

Staff Writer

A trio of the Midwest Athletic Conference’s top teams went down a week ago in the final week of non-conference play. That’s the risk when top-flight teams schedule other top-notch teams and are willing to hit the road like Coldwater, Fort Recovery and Versailles were a week ago in losses to Clinton-Massie, Valley View and Delphos Jefferson.

The MAC is hoping that sort of brave schedule-making will only make its teams stronger as they head into conference play this week.

Coldwater has little time to lick its wounds after a 24-14 loss to Clinton-Massie. Marion Local is coming to town for a league showdown that offers up the best two small-school programs in Ohio and the biggest 50-50 jackpot.

Marion Local looks as loaded as ever after handing the team it beat in the state semifinals last year a 41-0 loss last Friday. Marion Local hasn’t lost a non-conference game in the regular season since Shawnee stunned the Flyers in 2011. Coldwater hadn’t lost a non-conference game in the regular season since 2013 before Clinton-Massie ended the streak. Now both will face off in a game that suddenly has playoff implications following Coldwater’s drop from Division V to Division VI.

Minster, which is 2-0 to start the season coming off a trip to the Horseshoe itself, has yet to give up a point. Jared Huelsman had another big week on the ground and added special teams extraordinaire to the resume with a blocked punt that resulted in a touchdown. After a few wilderness campaigns (DSJ is 10-21 over the past three seasons), St. John’s appears to be back in the mix in the MAC. They’ll go to Minster, hoping to move to 3-0 after beating both LCC and Woodward.

The other MAC team that hasn’t given up a point yet? It’s New Bremen, which moved to 2-0 after beating up on Mississinawa Valley. After blowout wins over Bradford and MV, New Bremen will see how far it’s improvedwhen it hosts 2-0 St. Henry.

Fort Recovery will try to recover from a loss to Valley View against a Parkway team that won its first game since Week 5 of the 2016 season. The Panthers gutted out a 14-13 win over Spencerville to move to 1-1.

Anna and Versailles could be a good one, as the Rockets have outscored their opponents 101-12 to get out to a 2-0 start. Versailles will try to bounce back from a 14-7 defensive battle loss to Delphos Jefferson.
